Mont-St-Michel is located on the island of Mont-Tombe (Tomb on the Hill) off the coast of Normandy. It began as an abbey built during the 8th century. In 1017 work began on a Romanesque church built over the abbey. A monastery built on three levels was added during the early 13th century. In medieval times, the monastery was renowned as a center for learning.
